| Alpine Electronics Now Shipping System Solution For Blackbird Portable Navigation Device TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 31st, 2006 – Setting a new standard for navigation flexibility, Alpine Electronics of America, Inc., is now shipping the PMD-DOK1 wired docking station for its Blackbird (PMD-B100) portable navigation device. Using the dock and a compatible Alpine A/V touch-screen head unit, the portable Blackbird unit can be used as the main navigation source in a fully integrated in-car audio/video + navigation (AVN) system. With the dock, total control and viewing of the Blackbird's mapping, driving instructions and traffic alerts (via NAVTEQ® Traffic RDS™, service subscription required) are automatically transferred to the larger Alpine touch-screen head unit. The Blackbird then serves as the main navigation "brain" in a powerful AVN system. With the Blackbird dedicated to navigation processing, this frees up the head unit to focus on entertainment system operations. "The Blackbird dock lets consumers use their Blackbird at its fullest potential. They get the ease and convenience of a car-to-car portable navigation device, plus the ability to use the Blackbird as part of a comprehensive in-car AVN system," said Stephen Witt, vice president, Marketing, Alpine Electronics. Once docked, all navigation display screens and control functions are transferred to the A/V head unit. Navigation functions are then controlled through the head unit's touch-screen display or optional remote control. The Blackbird's turn-by-turn voice commands are delivered via the car's audio system and the NaviMix function automatically lowers the volume of music playback during voice-delivered driving instructions. MP3/WMA music files played off an SD card inside the Blackbird are also played back through the car's audio system. Unlike other all-in-one AVN systems, the Blackbird runs the navigation mode on its own and does not take processing power away from the IVA-W205, enabling the IVA-W205 to focus on audio and video functions. Therefore, two processors are used simultaneously for navigation and multimedia sources, resulting in an incredibly powerful integrated system.
